Earlier this year I re-read Dorothy Sayers' "The Lost Tools of Learning," and it prompted me to rethink our approach to classical education. In her essay, Sayers described the three parts of the Trivium in terms of the three stages of the development of a child's mind. She recommended beginning with the grammar stage once the child knows how to read and write, so I've added an earlier heading, the primary stage, to cover those earlier years.
